WNFC FIELD OUTING AUGUST 2012 (KILMICHAEL POINT)

At 10.30. on the 11th of August 2012 26 club members assembled at Kilmichael Point County Wexford for the monthly club outing under the excellent leadership of Zoe Devlin. Zoe is a club member, botanist, compiler of the website www.widflowersofireland.net and the author of the wonderful book WILDFLOWERS OF IRELAND a personal record so we were in very able hands for our morning of botanising.

Kilmichael Point is on the East coast  on the border with County Wicklow and is part of the Kilpatrick sand dune system SAC. The habitats consist of sandy cliffs, rocky shores , sand dune systems scrubland and wetland.

In all 85 plant species were documented the rarest of which being the Lesser meadow rue- thalictrum minor a plant most associated with the west of ireland. One club member who lives in the area said that in recent times she has noticed the number of wild plants decreasing and that this could possibly be due to lack of winter grazing by cattle. It was decided that the club would contact the local wildlife officer with a view to reinstate this practice.

The club members had a wonderful morning learning about lots of new plants and many thanks to Zoe for this. The weather had been dry with a stiff East wind and after a picnic and a chat we all went our respective ways.
