I-WEBS Survey at the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve

Alyn Walsh, Wexford Wildfowl Reserve outlined the requirements of the I-WEBS survey to the group and estimates of the following species were quantified:
Lapwing (~70)
Wigeon (~160)
Mallard (~120) Also recorded:
Redwing
Bewick's, Whooper and Mute Swans
Cormorants
Curlew;
Tufted Duck
Golden Eye
Scaup
Little Grebe
Redshank
Black-tailed Godwit
Pochard
Teal
Great Black-backed Gull
Pink-footed

Planting a Wildlife Garden

The March field trip was held at the Wexford Organic Centre, Cushinstown. The focus of the event was planting a wildlife garden.

In the morning, Dominic Berridge led a workshop on planting a wildlife garden using native species while Eva Kelly led a similar discussion utilising cultivated and native species.

In the afternoon, Dominic Berridge presented examples of owl and bird boxes.

Report: Butterfly Walk at the Raven Nature Reserve

Chris Wilson led the April field trip around the Raven Nature Reserve.

The Club followed the Raven Wood Butterfly Transect set up in 2007 under the Irish Butterfly Monitoring Scheme. This walk is completed once a week on a suitable day between the 1st April and 30th September.
The initial purpose of the walk was to help tune WNFC members in their butterfly identification skills but the cold and blustery weather was not suitable.
